Hayden Carruth, born in Waterbury, Conn., died at his home in Munnsville, New York. Smartish Pace poet Brooks Haxton states that the cause of Carruth’s death was complications from a series of strokes. Known as a poet, critic, reviewer and editor, Carruth was the author of 30 books. His first poetry collection, The Crow and the Heart, was published in 1959. His 1996 book, Scrambled Eggs & Whiskey, won the National Book Award for poetry.
