Giovanni Pascoli was born in San Mauro (Emilia-Romagna), Italy in 1858, a middle child in a family of eight children living on the estate for which his father was administrator. He won international medals for his poems in latin and his work on Homeric themes. Before his death in 1912, he lived for seventeen years on a small estate near Barga.
