Poet Jay Hopler was named a recipient of a Whiting Writers Award given to emerging writers of poetry, fiction, nonfiction and plays. The award comes with a $50,000 check. Hopler’s new work will appear in Smartish Pace, Issue 17 (April, 2010). Other Whiting winners in poetry this year were Jericho Brown and Joan Kane. This was the 25th anniversary of the awards which in the past have been given to such poets as Jorie Graham, C.D. Wright and Mark Doty.
