Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Maryland is the latest institution to come under attack from the Westboro Baptist Church. The anti-gay group has organized a protest tentatively scheduled for April 24 to condemn the American poet’s possible homosexuality. Whitman High’s principal has announced that the school will proceed as normal. We worry for the safety of the students in AP English, commuters in and around the Walt Whitman Bridge in nearby Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and poetry sections in Barnes & Noble Bookstores nationwide.
