Rockland County, New York, became one of just a handful of counties in the US to create a Poet Laureate position. Dan Masterson, a 75 year old college English professor has been named their first poet laureate. And while it’s not exactly being Joseph Auslander, the 1st U.S. Consultant in Poetry (now called Poet Laureate), Masterson is required to write poetry to mark major county events and choose his successor in 2011. We say: three cheers for poetry in Rockland!
