Elizabeth Alexander Selected as Inaugural Poet

December 17th, 2008

Elizabeth Alexander, a professor of African-American studies at Yale, will recite one of her poems immediately following Barack Obama’s inaugural address on January 20, 2009. She is the author of four books of poetry including American Subline, a finalist for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize in poetry. Alexander’s father served as an adviser to Obama during his campaign. Alexander will become just the fourth poet to read at an inauguration following Robert Frost for John F. Kennedy, and Maya Angelou & Miller Williams for Bill Clinton’s first and second inaugurations, respectively.
