Fleur Adcock Wins Queen’s Poetry Prize

Her collection, Poems 1960-2000, has won of the 2006 Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry. Since 1933 this intermittently issued award has been given in recognition of an outstanding book of poetry. The 72 year old Adcock was born in Papkura, New Zealand in 1934 and has lived in Britain since 1963. She is the seventh women to receive this award. Adcock will be presented the award by the Queen at Buckingham Palace on June 7, and joins the ranks for former winners including W.H. Auden, Ted Hughes, Philip Larkin and Les Murray. (4/26/06)
