Smartish Pace Editor Stephen Reichert nominated Laurel Hunt, and her poem "Glass," and D.M. Macormic, and his poem "Identity Theft," for Best New Poets 2017. SP nominations have won in past years and we hope Hunt and Macormic are both selected this year.

SP Poet Jacob Polley wins T.S. Eliot Prize

Congratulations to Smartish Pace poet Jacob Polley for winning the T.S. Eliot Prize, the world's most prestigious poetry prize, for his new collection Jackself (Picador, 2016). Polley's new poems will appear in the next issue of Smartish Pace, released in Feb. 2016 and available at #AWP and here. Cheers!

SP Poet Aliki Branstone named MO Poet Laureate

Aliki Barnstone, of Columbia, was appointed by Gov. Nixon as Missouri’s new Poet Laureate. Barnstone is Professor of English in the Creative Writing program at the University of Missouri. A poet, translator, critic, and editor, she is the author of eight books of poetry, including Dwelling (forthcoming fall 2016). Her new poems appear in Smartish Pace, Issue 23.

Poet Matthew Zapruder Named the New Poetry Column Editor for The New York Times Magazine.

Poet Matthew Zapruder has been appointed the new poetry column editor for The New York Times Magazine. Born in Washington, D.C., he lives in Oakland, where he is the director of the Saint Mary’s College of California MFA Program in Creative Writing, as well as editor at large for Wave Books. He is the author of several books of poetry, including his fourth collection Sun Bear (2014) and Come On All You Ghosts (2010).
Poet C. D. Wright Dies at 67

C. D. Wright, American award-winning poet and writing professor at Brown University, unexpectedly passed away in her home on January 12, 2016. Her most recent book, Poet, the Lion, Talking Pictures, El Farolito, a Wedding in St. Roch, the Big Box Store, the Warp in the Mirror, Spring, Midnights, Fire and All, was published in November 2015.
Amit Majmudar appointed as the first Poet Laureate of Ohio

Amit Majmudar was appointed as the first Poet Laureate of Ohio. His work has appeared in many literary magazines including Smartish Pace, and few of his published poems are "By Accident," published in Counter Balance, "Reading," "The Miscarriage," "Instructions to an Artisan," and so on.
